Business signs for new premises: what to prioritise before opening

When a move or opening date is approaching, every part of the premises competes for attention. A practical plan for business signs starts with the visitor journey: can people recognise the building, find the entrance and understand what to do once they arrive?

Use this checklist to agree priorities before ordering individual signs. For the available formats and project support, see our business signs service.

1. Walk the route as a first-time visitor

Approach the premises from the directions customers are likely to use. Look for places where the entrance is hidden, the business name becomes difficult to read or a delivery driver might take the wrong turn. Repeat the exercise from the car park and pedestrian approach.

Record the decision points on a simple plan. This gives each proposed sign a purpose and helps avoid spending the budget on a prominent feature while missing a crucial entrance marker.

2. Separate opening essentials from later additions

Make three lists: signs needed to identify the premises, information needed to use the space, and branding or promotional additions. Your first phase may include a fascia, entrance identification, opening hours and directions to reception. The mix will depend on the premises.

Keep statutory and safety signage requirements on a separate project checklist with the appropriate advisers. Decorative branding does not replace those requirements.

3. Check visibility before choosing a finish

Review the intended viewing distance, surrounding colours and available light. A material that looks attractive in a close-up sample may not provide enough contrast across a road. Avoid adding too much information to a sign that people only have a moment to read.

For premises used after dark, discuss illumination, power and any restrictions early. Our guide to common sign types can help you compare formats before refining the specification.

4. Confirm what can be fixed to the building

Photograph the proposed locations and ask which surfaces can accept fixings. Establish who controls the façade, windows and shared entrance areas. Lease conditions, landlord approval and any applicable consents can affect the design and programme.

Do this before committing to manufacture. A survey can identify access needs and installation details that are difficult to judge from drawings alone.

5. Order the information as well as the signs

Agree the exact business name, room names, opening hours and contact details before artwork is signed off. Give one person responsibility for collecting approvals so conflicting amendments do not reach production.

Provide vector logos, colour references and brand guidance. Our article on briefing a sign maker explains which assets help move the project forward.

6. Plan installation around the opening programme

Coordinate with decorators, electricians and fit-out contractors. Confirm when finished surfaces will be ready and whether installation needs to happen outside working hours. Build time into the programme for a final check of messages, fixings and lighting.

If some elements will follow after opening, agree the complete visual specification now so later signs feel part of the same scheme.

Turn the checklist into a brief

Bring together your route plan, priority list, photographs, artwork and target date. These details make the scope easier to quote and help distinguish essential work from later enhancements.
