Sign writing history
The progress of signwriting and all of its conventional methods started during the Victorian era in 1854 where some techniques like glass-gilding were firmly established. Some sign writings were kept in the wreckage of Pompeii and their writings were basically on notable walls for elections and games.
The act of mixing gold leaf characters with a smalt background started in the 1870’s. This is used to strengthen the looks of a sign.
Most times it is used with gilded well-rounded wood letters or with flat gilded characters. The latter was frequently used in the 1800s. In the 20th century, the sign industry such as drugstores and banks used gold leaf writings on their Windows. From carts, trucks to any carriage, there was gold leaf lettering.
Using sand tainted with Japan colour was frequently used in giving the signage background a velvety look. A High-level method involving the use of glass coloured blue with cobalt oxide also known as smalt was also used, however, several colours of glass was monumentally used on signs with smalt backgrounds

How it is done
The signwriter would put in the gold leaf to the areas with letters or symbols on them, afterward, the letters are marked out by rapid movement using a brush so the smalts can stick to the surface due to the various admixtures used such as thick paste of white lead combined with linseed oil, varnish, and black paint.
While the paint is wet, the writer would scrutinize the smalt on the paint and then let it settle into the paste before getting rid of the excess paint. It is best to let it dry properly, preferably overnight to get a granulated texture and a non-fading framework.
